A new report by Healthians highlights an alarming rise in breast cancer cases among Indian women aged 55-64, with 16 per cent of women in this age group affected. The findings come at the start of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and shed light on the growing health crisis faced by women across the nation. Rajasthan leads the list with 30 per cent of women in this age group diagnosed with breast cancer, raising serious concerns about regional disparities in healthcare access.
The report, based on three years of health data, reveals that Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand also have high breast cancer prevalence, with 22 per cent of women in the 55-64 age bracket affected. These figures underscore the urgent need for early detection, improved access to treatment, and increased awareness of preventive measures.
"Breast cancer is a significant health issue, especially for older women," said Dr. Sonal Saxena, Senior Pathologist Consultant at Healthians. “Symptoms like lumps, changes in breast shape, or skin dimpling should not be ignored. Regular screenings, particularly for high-risk groups like women over 55, are crucial,” she added.
Several factors contribute to the rise in breast cancer cases, including late pregnancies, family history, and lifestyle choices such as smoking and stress. Health experts stress the importance of regular check-ups and timely interventions.
Deepak Sahni, Founder of Healthians, emphasised the need for early detection: "Breast cancer rates are rising, and we must act. Early screening and timely intervention can save lives. At Healthians, we encourage regular health check-ups and preventive care, particularly for high-risk groups."
The report also highlights regional variations in breast cancer prevalence. Rajasthan tops the list with 30 per cent, followed by Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand at 22 per cent. States like Karnataka (5 per cent) and Maharashtra (8 per cent) show lower prevalence rates, indicating a need for region-specific interventions.
