Empowering Cancer Patients: Highlights From BW Healthcare World's Oncology Summit

The BW Healthcare World community of BW Businessworld took the initiative to conduct a full-day Oncology Summit, on Thursday the 9th of May, 2024 at The Imperial Hotel in New Delhi. The event was highlighted with the theme – ‘From Fear to Empowerment’, and provided a plethora of knowledge and support for cancer patients, survivors and caregivers. The best and most experienced doctors were present from different parts of the country and spoke about cancer holistically, practically and compassionately.

Comprising of 4 keynote sessions, 6 power-packed panel discussions and 1 fireside chat, the summit was held solely for the purpose of spreading awareness and compassion to people who were, or are battling a form of cancer. The audience came from Patna, Goa, Bengaluru, among many other places. Meaningful collaborations for a ramp walk and art jam created engagement between the audience and the speakers. This was a one-of-a-kind event as fun activities created a joyful vibe.

The aim of this summit was to create a sense of relief for people who are suffering from cancer and respect for those who have fought cancer and are living normal lives again. The summit kicked off with an Art Jam which was a painting session for patients, survivors, caregivers and doctors by – ‘The Art Floor’. Diving right into the main aspect of the theme of the event, the opening keynote was about how cancer has evolved over time. With large scale developments in precision medicine and implications for quality, accessible and equitable cancer care, the evolution of cancer has certainly been highlighted at this summit. In the midst of the power-packed panel discussions and keynote addresses was a Ramp Walk for Cancer Champions, Parents, Caregivers, Nurses, Doctors, and colleagues of survivors, which was curated by Anchal Sharma – Founder, of Can Heal and Meals of Happiness.

The positivity created an ambience of extreme enthusiasm and engagement informally amongst all present. The summit covered everything relevant and significant from recent advances of Radiation Therapy to developing India as a cancer treatment option for the world. The topic of the role of doctors beyond medication was touched upon, and this led to an emotional understanding that mental health is also very important for cancer patients. Chemotherapy and adjunctive therapies in cancer care were discussed in detail and light was also shed on the impact of technology on cancer.

Doctors and other eminent speakers touched upon the fact that the word ‘cancer’ should not create immediate fear. Technology and medical infrastructure as of now is key to changing this equation of fear and immediate shock to a solution-oriented approach. The summit also highlighted stalwarts of the healthcare industry and a lot of knowledge was imparted to the very enthusiastic audience. The summit ended with a very grateful audience and a lot of compassion and unity being present. Everyone took their share of learning and positivity back with them.
