HCG Cancer Centre Advances Appendix Cancer Treatment With HIPEC Procedure

The patient, identified as Tejas S (name changed on request), had been experiencing abdominal pain for over two months. Initially misdiagnosed with tuberculosis due to persistent symptoms, further evaluation revealed mucinous adenocarcinoma of the appendix

HCG Cancer Centre, Bangalore achieved a significant milestone in the treatment of appendix cancer by successfully performing a unique Cytoreductive surgery with Hyperthermic Intra Peritoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC) procedure on a 40-year-old man suffering from mucinous adenocarcinoma of the appendix.

In a press statement on Thursday, the healthcare provider further informed that Pampanagouda S K M, Senior Consultant Surgical Oncologist, and a multidisciplinary team led the groundbreaking medical feat, combining both procedures to tackle the challenging case.

The patient, identified as Tejas S (name changed on request), had been experiencing abdominal pain for over two months. Initially misdiagnosed with tuberculosis due to persistent symptoms, further evaluation revealed mucinous adenocarcinoma of the appendix. Following the failed appendectomy, Tejas sought expert treatment at HCG Cancer Centre, Double Road.

Pampanagouda and his team discovered that despite the appendectomy, tumour cells had spread into Tejas’ peritoneal cavity, necessitating the critical Cytoreductive surgery followed by the HIPEC procedure.

Explaining the treatment approach,  Pampanagouda stated, “When the patient arrived, imaging revealed the cancer had spread extensively. Cytoreductive surgery followed by HIPEC was deemed the most effective treatment. The patient underwent a rigorous nine-hour procedure, involving the removal of the entire abdominal wall lining, large bowel, and mesentery deposits, followed by HIPEC at 42 degrees centigrade.”

Remarkably, Tejas responded well to the surgery, experiencing a smooth recovery without major complications. He was discharged from the hospital on the 11th day post-surgery.

Pampanagouda commended his multidisciplinary team for their dedication and expertise, attributing the success to years of experience in performing complex cancer surgeries.

Expressing gratitude, Tejas remarked, “After enduring constant pain, weight loss, and extensive treatment, being able to lead a normal life feels like a miracle. I am immensely grateful to the proficient team at HCG Cancer Centre for their precise treatment and care.”
