A recent report from Healthians reveals a growing concern over high cholesterol levels in India, with 31 per cent of the population now affected. Kerala stands out with an alarming 63 per cent prevalence of high cholesterol, according to the findings gathered from three years of health tests conducted across the country.
The report highlights that individuals in the 35-54 age group are the most vulnerable, with 34.5 per cent of this demographic showing elevated cholesterol levels.
Dr. Gagan Saini, a heart health expert at Healthians, points out the lifestyle factors contributing to this rise in cholesterol levels, including poor eating habits, lack of physical activity, and increased stress. He emphasises the importance of regular health check-ups, a balanced diet, and physical activity to reduce the risk of heart disease. The equal prevalence of high cholesterol among men (31 per cent) and women (30 per cent) underlines that this is a widespread issue affecting both genders.
The report also draws attention to regional disparities, with states like Kerala, Karnataka, and Telangana emerging as hotspots for high cholesterol. Kerala leading with 63 per cent, followed by Karnataka at 31.9 per cent, and Telangana at 27.4 per cent. These findings underscore the urgent need for targeted public health interventions and preventive healthcare measures to address the rising cholesterol crisis in India.
