Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta Road, has successfully treated a 37-year-old woman pregnant with twins who was diagnosed with advanced breast cancer. The case, managed by a skilled team led by Dr Sandeep Nayak P, Director of the Department of Surgical Oncology, presented a unique challenge requiring specialised, multidisciplinary care to safeguard the mother and her unborn children.
Approximately one year ago, Priya (name changed) discovered a lump in her right breast during her 18th week of pregnancy. An MRI confirmed a complex breast mass affecting nearby tissues and lymph nodes in the armpit and chest, though it had not spread to muscles. A biopsy later revealed that she had stage 3, HER2-positive invasive ductal carcinoma, a particularly aggressive type of breast cancer that is unresponsive to certain hormone therapies.
The Fortis medical team, comprising oncologists, obstetricians, and surgeons, devised a treatment plan carefully balancing maternal care and fetal safety. Dr Bharath G, Consultant - Surgical Oncology at Fortis Hospital, explained, “Priya’s case was exceptionally complex, as she was simultaneously carrying twins and facing a rapidly advancing cancer. Our team began with chemotherapy to manage the cancer, taking every necessary precaution to safeguard the twins. At 34 weeks, we performed an early Caesarean section to deliver the babies, which allowed us to intensify her treatment while ensuring their safety.”
Post-delivery, a PET scan indicated further cancer spread, requiring a mastectomy to remove the affected breast. Dr Vivek Belathur, Senior Consultant - Medical Oncology, noted, “Following the birth, Priya underwent mastectomy and has since started targeted HER2 therapy alongside bone-strengthening medications. Recent scans have shown promising results, with signs of reduced cancer progression. Plans for breast reconstruction are scheduled for the coming months.”
Reflecting on the successful treatment, Akshay Oleti, Business Head at Fortis Hospitals, Bengaluru, commented, “This case demonstrates our commitment to personalised, compassionate care. Our team at Fortis leveraged advanced medical technologies, such as targeted therapy and specialised imaging, to create a comprehensive, patient-centered treatment plan for Priya. We remain dedicated to pushing the boundaries of patient care and improving outcomes even in the most complex situations.”
Fortis Hospital’s multidisciplinary approach in managing Priya’s case exemplifies its commitment to integrating innovation with patient-centred care, providing renewed hope and setting new standards in oncology.
