The rising incidence of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) among young adults aged 25-55 in India is causing growing concern, according to Vitus Care, a leading provider of renal care and dialysis services. This sharp increase, combined with high rates of kidney disease among older populations, is straining the country’s healthcare system and underscores the urgent need for enhanced awareness, prevention efforts, and organ donation initiatives.
“Kidney diseases lead to high morbidity and mortality rates,” said Dr. Saurabh Pokhariyal, Co-founder of Vitus Care. "Symptoms develop gradually, including fatigue, vomiting, swelling, high blood pressure, and decreased urination, eventually leading to life-threatening complications."
Experts are attributing this alarming trend to lifestyle factors such as rising rates of obesity, diabetes, and hypertension. Poor diets high in processed foods, sedentary work environments, and lifestyle choices are significantly contributing to the early onset of kidney disease among the younger population.
Environmental and genetic factors also play a role, with exposure to heavy metals, pesticides, and the misuse of over-the-counter drugs further exacerbating the risk. The medical community is stressing the importance of lifestyle changes to reduce the burden of kidney disease.
Dr. Pokhariyal added, “Adopting a balanced diet, regular exercise, and proper management of conditions like diabetes and hypertension can significantly reduce the risk of kidney disease.”
The increasing demand for dialysis services and transplants is driving healthcare professionals to advocate for greater public education on kidney health and lifestyle disease prevention.
