Alkem Laboratories Teams Up With Hospitals Nationwide For 'Reliever Free India' Initiative On World Asthma Day

Asthma affects an estimated 262 million people globally, leading to recurrent episodes of wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness, and coughing

Ahead of World Asthma Day 2024, Alkem Laboratories (Alkem) has announced its collaboration with nearly 100 hospitals in tier-1 and tier-2 cities across India as part of its ongoing "Reliever Free India" initiative. The pharmaceutical giant  in a press statement on Monday, revealed plans to conduct 600 to 700 camps throughout the country to raise awareness about asthma management and the importance of controller medications.

Launched in 2023, the "Reliever Free India" initiative aims to revolutionise asthma management by advocating for a shift from reliance on reliever medications to the utilisation of controller medications. While reliever medications provide quick relief during asthma symptoms, controller medications are taken regularly to prevent symptoms and reduce inflammation in the airways.

Asthma affects an estimated 262 million people globally, leading to recurrent episodes of wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness, and coughing. Despite medical advancements, asthma remains a significant challenge for both patients and healthcare providers. Alkem Laboratories recognises the crucial role of education in empowering individuals to effectively manage their asthma and lead fulfilling lives.

A spokesperson for Alkem Laboratories stated, "Since the inception of our campaign, we have engaged with over 500 camps. This year, we are expanding our commitment by organising at least 600 camps and clinics to raise awareness about asthma and its management. Our goal is to equip patients with the knowledge necessary to take control of their health. Through the 'Reliever Free India' campaign, we are advocating for a proactive approach to asthma management, with the aim of improving outcomes and enhancing the quality of life for individuals with this condition."

The "Reliever Free India" campaign underscores the importance of using controller medications for optimal asthma management. While reliever medications provide immediate relief during asthma attacks, they do not address the underlying inflammation that contributes to the condition's chronic nature. Over-reliance on relievers can lead to poor long-term outcomes and increased risk of exacerbations. Through this campaign, Alkem Laboratories seeks to educate patients, healthcare professionals, and the general public about the benefits of controller medications in preventing asthma symptoms and reducing the need for rescue medication.
