Apollo Cancer Centres (ACCs), a pioneer in advanced cancer care, has unveiled India’s first LungLife Screening Program aimed at early detection of lung cancer, a disease that accounts for 5.9 per cent of all cancers and 8.1 per cent of cancer-related deaths in the country.
The program focuses on high-risk individuals, including those aged between 50 and 80 years, asymptomatic individuals with no signs of lung cancer, smokers with significant smoking history, and people with a family history of lung cancer. Leveraging low-dose computed tomography (LDCT), the initiative ensures early-stage detection while minimising radiation exposure and improving diagnostic accuracy.
According to GLOBOCAN 2020 data from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide, accounting for an estimated 1.8 million deaths in 2020. Despite this, around 80 per cent of high-risk individuals have never discussed screening with healthcare providers. The LungLife Screening Program aims to bridge this gap by fostering awareness and encouraging proactive healthcare measures.
Dr. Ravindra M Mehta, Senior Consultant in Pulmonology and Critical Care Medicine at Apollo Cancer Centre Bangalore, emphasised the importance of early detection. “Lung cancer is among the deadliest cancers, but early detection can significantly improve survival rates. With our LungLife Screening Program, we use advanced LDCT technology to identify high-risk individuals early, offering them a renewed hope for better treatment outcomes and a healthier future.”
Dr. (Prof.) Vishwanath S, Senior Consultant in Medical Oncology at Apollo Cancer Centre Bangalore, added, “This program marks a pivotal step in combating the alarming rise of lung cancer in India. By focusing on early-stage detection and leveraging state-of-the-art diagnostic technology, we prioritise patient safety and effective treatment, transforming lives through timely intervention.”
Dr. (Prof.) Sridhar P S, Lead Consultant in Radiation Oncology at Apollo Cancer Centre Bangalore, highlighted the initiative's transformative potential. “Lung cancer often progresses silently, making early detection critical. The LungLife Screening Program combines precision diagnostics with patient-centric care, enhancing survival rates and reinforcing our commitment to redefining cancer treatment standards.”
Dr. Manish Mattoo, CEO of Karnataka & Central Region at Apollo Hospitals, expressed pride in launching this pioneering program. “Being the first in India to introduce the LungLife Screening Program reflects Apollo Cancer Centre’s leadership in oncology care. Our mission is to save lives while empowering individuals to take charge of their health.”
