Fortis Bannerghatta Road Averts Paralysis For 15-Year-Old With Dislocated Spinal Disc

The life-saving spine surgery, known as ‘Micro-Lumbar Discectomy’, was performed by a team led by Ganesh V, Senior Consultant - Neurosurgeon at Fortis Hospital Cunningham Road

Fortis Hospital Bannerghatta Road has successfully treated a 15-year-old boy, Syed Salahuddin Quadri, weighing 111 kg, who was suffering from a severely dislocated spinal disc.

The life-saving spine surgery, known as ‘Micro-Lumbar Discectomy’, was performed by a team led by Ganesh V, Senior Consultant - Neurosurgeon at Fortis Hospital Cunningham Road, the hospital informed in a press statement on Thursday.

Syed’s journey began with an intense four-month struggle with severe pain and immobility caused by an extruded disc. The pain, which radiated from his lower back to his ankles, severely impacted his daily activities and studies. Despite seeking medical assistance at local hospitals in Bellary, his condition showed no improvement. Desperate for relief, Syed travelled to Bangalore and was admitted to Fortis Hospital Bannerghatta.

Advanced MRI scans revealed a severe Posterocentral Disc Extrusion at the L3-L4 level of his spine. This condition, where the inner core of the spinal disc ruptures through its outer layer and presses against the spinal cord and nerve roots, caused excruciating pain and compromised his mobility.

Recognising the severity of his condition, Ganesh V recommended a Micro-Lumbar Discectomy, a minimally invasive surgical procedure aimed at removing the extruded disc to relieve pressure on the nerves. The hour-long surgery was meticulously executed, focusing on delicate and precise movements to ensure the safety of surrounding nerves and tissues.

Following the successful surgery, Syed experienced immediate relief from pain. His recovery not only restored his physical mobility but also revitalised his spirit, enabling him to return to his studies and daily activities.

Ganesh V commented on the procedure stating, “Treating this case presented significant challenges due to the severe compression of nerve roots in the spine, particularly because the patient was young and obese. The primary goal was to relieve the pressure on the compressed nerves by carefully removing the problematic disc material. This required attention to detail to avoid any damage to the adjacent structures. By successfully performing the Micro-Lumbar Discectomy, we alleviated the acute pain and restored normal nerve function for the patient, providing long-term relief and improved mobility.”

Akshay Oleti, Business Head, Fortis Hospitals, Bangalore, expressed his pride in the hospital's success said,  “I am immensely proud of our recent success in treating a young boy with spinal issues. This complex case had a positive outcome because of our hospital’s expert medical team. This achievement underscores Fortis Healthcare’s dedication to clinical excellence and its commitment to being at the forefront of technological advancement for the best possible patient outcomes.”
