In a landmark case, doctors at Fortis Hospital Vasant Kunj have successfully conducted a total knee replacement surgery on 97-year-old Resham Devi, marking her as the oldest Indian to undergo the procedure at the hospital. Led by Dr. Dhananjay Gupta, Director of Orthopaedic, Replacement, and Reconstructions, the complex surgery has enabled Resham to regain mobility and live independently, despite her severe osteoarthritis.
Resham Devi, who has been living independently in Vrindavan for 30 years, faced immense mobility challenges following a hip fracture last year and the progression of osteoarthritis in both knees. Determined to regain her independence, she opted for a double knee replacement despite her advanced age. Over six months, she underwent extensive physiotherapy and pre-surgical preparations, including bone-strengthening supplements.
After a thorough pre-anaesthesia checkup, Devi was cleared for surgery. The team at Fortis performed the left knee replacement first, followed by the right knee. Post-surgery, she was monitored in the ICU and mobilised the next day using a walker, signalling a smooth recovery process.
Dr. Dhananjay Gupta highlighted the importance of timely intervention for elderly patients with mobility issues, emphasising how such surgeries can greatly improve quality of life and mental well-being. Dr. Gurvinder Kaur, Facility Director at Fortis Hospital, commended the team’s expertise and dedication, noting the case as an inspiring example of overcoming age-related barriers to treatment.
