Fortis Hospital Saves 10-Year-Old Accident Victim With Critical Abdominal Surgery

A month ago, Mohan was involved in a severe accident where a vehicle ran over him, causing significant trauma to his abdomen

In a remarkable display of medical expertise and teamwork, Fortis Hospital Bannerghatta Road, Bengaluru, successfully saved the life of a 10-year-old boy from Anantapur who suffered severe injuries in a road accident. The young patient, referred to as Mohan (name changed), sustained critical damage to his intestines, requiring immediate surgical intervention.

A month ago, Mohan was involved in a severe accident where a vehicle ran over him, causing significant trauma to his abdomen. Initially treated at a local hospital in Anantapur, he was discharged but continued to suffer from intense abdominal pain and frequent vomiting. Recognising the seriousness of his condition, his family brought him to Fortis Bannerghatta Road for further evaluation.

Upon his arrival, a comprehensive examination, including an X-ray, was conducted by the medical team at Fortis, revealing trapped air and liquid in the intestines. It became clear that an urgent surgical procedure was necessary. Under the guidance of Dr. Yogesh Kumar Gupta, Consultant - Paediatrician and Intensivist, and Dr. Sreedhara Murthy, Consultant - Paediatric Surgery, the decision was made to proceed with the surgery immediately.

"During the surgery, we discovered scar tissue, known as adhesions, causing a blockage in his small intestine," explained Sreedhara Murthy. "Additionally, there were multiple holes in the small intestine due to the accident, necessitating the removal of the damaged section and performing surgical anastomosis. This complex surgery was crucial to restore normal digestion and relieve his pain. The patient tolerated the procedure well and recovered without complications."

Yogesh Kumar Gupta highlighted the multidisciplinary effort required for Mohan's recovery. "Watching Mohan's progress from a critical condition to full recovery has been incredible. Early intervention, careful monitoring, and thorough post-surgery care were crucial. The expertise of our multidisciplinary team, including the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PMICU), played a vital role in his remarkable improvement."

Akshay Oleti, Business Head of Fortis Hospitals, Bengaluru, expressed his satisfaction with the successful outcome. “Seeing the young boy recover so well has brought us immense happiness. Our team of paediatricians and surgeons at Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta Road, demonstrated their expertise and implemented timely interventions to ensure his successful recovery. It's truly gratifying to witness such positive outcomes, knowing that our efforts have made a meaningful difference in his life.
