Fortis Memorial Research Institute Unveils South Asia's First Gamma Knife Esprit

The Gamma Knife Esprit employs computer-guided precision to target brain tumours without cutting, making it an optimal choice for treating multiple brain metastases, meningiomas, acoustic tumours, and pituitary adenomas

Fortis Memorial Research Institute has launched South Asia's first Gamma Knife Esprit, marking a significant advancement in the non-surgical treatment of brain tumours. This latest version of the Leksell Gamma Knife enhances the therapeutic options for both malignant and benign brain tumours and other brain abnormalities.

The Gamma Knife Esprit employs computer-guided precision to target brain tumours without cutting, making it an optimal choice for treating multiple brain metastases, meningiomas, acoustic tumours, and pituitary adenomas. Its high precision is crucial for tumours in sensitive or hard-to-reach areas, sparing healthy brain tissues and allowing patients to return to daily activities almost immediately. Unlike traditional radiation therapy, which may require up to 30 sessions, Gamma Knife radiosurgery consolidates treatment into a single session with same-day discharge, making it a swift and efficient option.

This groundbreaking technology significantly minimises radiation exposure to healthy tissues, preserving motor, sensory nerve, and neurocognitive functions, enabling rapid recovery and improved quality of life. Gamma Knife radiosurgery is recognised globally as the gold standard for brain radiosurgery due to its high precision and minimal side effects. It boasts an accuracy of 0.3 mm, significantly reducing toxicities and ensuring a high success rate for controlling brain tumours and other conditions with a controlled rate surpassing 95 per cent over ten years.

Sandeep Vaishya, Director of Neurosurgery at Fortis Gurgaon, highlighted the importance of this technology, "The launch of South Asia's first Gamma Knife Esprit marks a significant milestone in neurosurgery. This advanced technology brings a level of precision that was previously unattainable, minimizing radiation exposure to healthy tissues and significantly enhancing patient safety and comfort."

Anil Vinayak, Group COO of Fortis Healthcare, emphasised the broader vision,  "Deploying the first Gamma Knife Esprit in South Asia is a testament to Fortis Healthcare's commitment to integrating cutting-edge technologies in neurosurgery and holistic cancer care. Our commitment extends beyond advanced treatments; it encompasses comprehensive care that enhances the overall patient journey and outcomes."

Jan Thesleff, Ambassador of Sweden to India, who was the Chief Guest at the inauguration, praised the collaboration, "The introduction of this precision radiosurgery technology, the first of its kind in South Asia, underscores the transformative impact of our partnership and FMRI's dedication to advancing healthcare excellence."
