AMR poses a significant threat to public health in India, with 297,000 deaths attributed to it in 2019 and 1,042,500 associated deaths

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has launched the National Alliance of Medical Professionals on Antimicrobial Resistance (NAMP-AMR), an initiative aimed at combating the growing threat of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR).

IMA in a press statement on Wednesday said that the alliance unites leaders and representatives from 52 medical speciality organisations across the nation to strategise and take action against this critical health crisis.

AMR poses a significant threat to public health in India, with 297,000 deaths attributed to it in 2019 and 1,042,500 associated deaths. The formation of NAMP-AMR marks the beginning of a concerted national effort to address this "silent pandemic." Narendra Saini, Chairman of IMA AMR, emphasised the urgency of tackling AMR, noting the high mortality rates and the pressing need for coordinated action.

VK Paul from NITI Aayog highlighted the potential impact of AMR on India's development, prosperity, and GDP. He commended the IMA's initiative, describing it as a crucial step toward making AMR a national priority. Paul stressed the importance of uniting all organisations under one banner to create a national movement against AMR.

Payden, Deputy Head of WHO India, and Anuj Sharma, Team focal point for AMR & IPC, WHO, echoed these sentiments. They emphasised the global urgency of addressing AMR and the importance of a collaborative approach. Sharma thanked the 52 medical organisations that joined forces to form NAMP-AMR.

Atul Goel, Director General of Health Services, underscored the need for enhanced medical education and training to improve the quality of medical practice. He emphasised the importance of understanding when and how to use antibiotics effectively to combat AMR.
