India Faces Surge In Gynaecological Cancers Among Young Women; Experts Advocate For Robotic Surgery

Leading gynaecological robotic surgeons gathered in New Delhi to address this concerning trend and advocate for the increased adoption of robotic-assisted surgery (RAS)

The rising incidence of gynaecological cancers among younger women in India has prompted urgent calls for enhanced preventive measures and advanced treatment options. Leading gynaecological robotic surgeons gathered in New Delhi to address this concerning trend and advocate for the increased adoption of robotic-assisted surgery (RAS).

The forum, organised by the Association of Gynaecological Robotic Surgeons of India (AGRS), is set to host the international conference RoboGyn India 2024. The event will bring together top national and international experts in robotic-assisted gynaecological surgery to discuss innovations and improvements in managing complex cases.

Dr Rama Joshi, a prominent gynaecological oncologist and the Organising Chairperson of RoboGyn India, highlighted the alarming rise in cases of endometrial cancer among women in their early 30s—an age group traditionally less affected by this condition. She attributed the increase to rapid urbanisation, lifestyle changes, and rising stress levels. “Regular check-ups and screenings are essential for early detection. Robotic-assisted surgery, especially with technologies like da Vinci, has proven crucial in managing these cases effectively,” Dr. Joshi said.

Dr Peter Lim, Medical Director at the Center of Hope Robotic & Minimally Invasive Pelvic Surgery, emphasised the advantages of robotic surgery in treating gynaecological cancers, particularly in obese patients. “Robotic-assisted surgery offers precision, reduced recovery times, and fewer complications, making it a valuable tool in managing complex cases,” he noted.

Dr. Rooma Sinha, President of AGRS, pointed out the need for more trained RAS surgeons to meet the growing demand. “One of our main goals is to train more surgeons in RAS to improve clinical outcomes for women across India. By leveraging advanced systems like the da Vinci, we aim to enhance surgical care,” she explained.

Dr. Tae Joong Kim from Samsung Medical Center in South Korea stressed the importance of incorporating robotic surgery into medical education. “Integrating robotic-assisted surgery into postgraduate training is essential for preparing future surgeons. This will not only improve their skills but also enhance patient care and outcomes,” he said.
