India's Heart Health Crisis

A recent report by CK Birla hospital titled, "Every Beat Counts," reveals the staggering toll of CVD, claiming 25 per cent of all deaths in the country, with 60 per cent of these deaths occurring prematurely

On this World Heart Day, the alarming reality of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in India demands our urgent attention. A recent report by CK Birla hospital titled, "Every Beat Counts," reveals the staggering toll of CVD, claiming 25 per cent of all deaths in the country, with 60 per cent of these deaths occurring prematurely. The most concerning aspect is the increasing prevalence of heart disease among younger individuals, women, and rural communities.

A Silent Epidemic

Redcliffe Labs' study of over 2.5 lakh patients underscores the widespread nature of this crisis. Nearly 50 per cent of individuals tested showed abnormal heart health indicators, highlighting the urgent need for early detection and prevention. Notably, women appear to be at a slightly higher risk, with 52 per cent of females exhibiting abnormal results compared to 47 per cent of males.

The Growing Burden of Heart Disease

Coronary artery disease (CAD) remains the primary culprit behind India's heart health crisis. The Every Beat Counts report paints a grim picture of the disease's rapid spread, outpacing the country's population growth. This alarming trend is a direct result of changing lifestyles, urbanisation, and the increasing prevalence of risk factors like sedentary habits, unhealthy diets, smoking, hypertension, and high cholesterol.

A Genetic Legacy

India's genetic predisposition to heart disease further complicates the situation. As Dr. Aparna Bhanushali from HaystackAnalytics points out, "For Indian patients, the age of onset for cardiac-related ailments is notably younger, with higher hospitalisation rates. In a small study, we observed genetic variants that can lead to sudden cardiac death, often due to electrical imbalances or cardiomyopathies. This highlights the need for greater awareness of these conditions and the importance of genetic screening in at-risk individuals."

Technology as a Lifesaver

Advanced diagnostic tools and home-based monitoring technology play a crucial role in early detection and prevention. As Tetsuya Yamada,Managing Director, OMRON Healthcare India emphasises, “By equipping doctors with cutting-edge home blood pressure, ECG, and AFib monitoring technology, we empower them to make a significant impact on patient care.”

Experts opine that by  prioritising early detection, prevention, and access to quality healthcare, we can mitigate the devastating impact of cardiovascular disease
