Innovative Optical Technology Receives Second Patent Boost In India

Sandip Chatterjee, the recipient of a government patent in 2022 for his invention in optical physics, has recently been granted a second patent by the government of India. This additional patent solidifies and augments the original invention, unveiling unique features with the potential to enhance precision and productivity across various applications. 

The core of Chatterjee's invention lies in the conversion of 2D images into stereoscopic 3D representations, a breakthrough that earned him the initial patent last year. The newly granted patent introduces a "light and shadow - unit measurement scale" to quantify the depth of light and darkness. This scale enables the numerical assessment of different light and shadow levels, offering a numeric perspective on depth perception. 

The impact of this invention extends beyond improved stereoscopic conversion accuracy. By employing the "light and shadow - unit measurement scale," the methodology can be utilised to identify stereo blindness, a condition affecting seven to 30 per cent of the general population. Stereo vision, crucial for depth perception, is essential for tasks ranging from driving to daily activities. The absence of stereoscopic vision can significantly impact individuals' lives, limiting their freedom and privileges. 

Applications for this technology span various fields, including space research, Geographic Information System (GIS), remote sensing, art research, 3D printing and medical research. The 'light and shadow - unit measurement scale' can find applications in Ophthalmology, Radiology, Medical Imaging and 3D body part analysis and creation. 

The potential benefits of this technology are plenty, ranging from value addition and concept elucidation to redefining images, enhancing entertainment experiences and providing realistic viewing angles. The versatile application of this technology in areas such as aviation, defence, virtual reality, education, forensics, and more showcases its adaptability and broad-reaching impact.
