Dr Rajeev Jayadevan, Chairman of the Kerala State IMA Research Cell, has challenged the notion of liver detox diets promoted on social media, calling them unscientific. Speaking at the 'Liver Facts and Myths - Transforming Liver Health' wellness convention, part of the 32nd Annual Scientific Meeting of the Indian National Association for the Study of the Liver (INASL-2024), Dr Jayadevan stressed the liver's natural ability to detoxify itself without the need for external remedies.
"Modern detox trends are often misinformed and reflect an outdated understanding of liver function," Dr. Jayadevan remarked. "The liver is adept at processing waste and toxins on its own. What is crucial is to avoid substances that harm it, such as excessive alcohol."
The convention, held at Le Meridian Kochi, gathered leading experts in hepatology to discuss liver health and prevention. They highlighted the rising incidence of fatty liver disease linked to poor lifestyle choices and alcohol use. Dr Jayadevan and other specialists, including Dr Mathew Philip, ISG President; Dr G.N. Ramesh, Organising Chairman of INASL; Dr Charles Panackel, Organising Secretary of INASL; and Dr Harikumar R. Nair, among others, emphasised the importance of maintaining a balanced diet, regular exercise, and healthy weight management as effective strategies for liver health.
The convention also featured talks by wellness advocates Ramesh Kanjilimadhom and Shefali Singh, who underscored the need for scientifically-backed approaches to liver care.
