Global science and technology leader, Merck, has announced new collaborations with two not-for-profit organisations in India – the Rashtreeya Sikshana Samithi Trust and the HCG Foundation.
In a press statement on Thursday, the company said that these partnerships aim to expand cancer screening and treatment support to underserved rural areas across Karnataka and Maharashtra, focusing on raising awareness and providing free cancer care services.
In its partnership with the HCG Foundation, Merck will deploy Oral Cancer Screening Vans to rural areas in Maharashtra, where it plans to organise 100 cancer camps. This initiative will benefit an estimated 10,000 rural residents by providing screenings and education on the symptoms and prevention of oral cancer. The program is designed to promote early diagnosis and preventive care in regions with limited healthcare access.
Additionally, Merck has joined forces with the Rashtreeya Sikshana Samithi Trust to enhance cancer care awareness and treatment in approximately 600 villages in Karnataka. Through this initiative, 933 people have been screened so far, with 60 receiving diagnostic support. Of those screened, 106 have been identified with pre-cancerous lesions, and 2 individuals diagnosed with cancer have been referred for further treatment.
The program offers free consultations and lab investigations, including Sugar Tests, BP and BMI measurements, and physical oral examinations. Digital apps are also being used to assess overall health, potential risk factors, and pre-cancerous conditions, ensuring comprehensive care and counselling for those in need.
Merck, dedicated to improving access to healthcare for all, has a long-standing commitment to social responsibility. Through initiatives like these and its past “Care on Wheels” oncology project, the company continues to positively impact lives across India, driving innovation in healthcare and providing crucial support to rural communities.
