Misdiagnosed Cervical Cyst Corrected During UTI Treatment At Wockhardt Hospitals

The patient, who had been battling persistent UTIs for the past four months, also had a medical history that included diabetes and 15 years of postmenopausal status

A 60-year-old woman receiving treatment for chronic urinary tract infections (UTIs) at Wockhardt Hospitals Mumbai Central was found to have a cervical nabothian cyst, initially misidentified as a polyp during preliminary examinations. The case underscores the critical importance of accurate diagnostics in managing chronic medical conditions.

The patient, who had been battling persistent UTIs for the past four months, also had a medical history that included diabetes and 15 years of postmenopausal status. Initial sonography suggested a cervical polyp, prompting a further investigation by Dr. Indrani Salunkhe, Gynecologist and Obstetrician at Wockhardt Hospitals. A subsequent Dilatation and Curettage (D&C) with hysteroscopy revealed the mass to be a 2×2 cm nabothian cyst rather than a polyp.

Dr. Salunkhe successfully drained the infected cyst, and a follow-up hysteroscopy confirmed the normalcy of the uterine cavity. She commented, “This case highlights the critical need for thorough diagnostic evaluation, especially in postmenopausal women with recurrent UTIs. Detailed cervix and vaginal examinations are essential in uncovering underlying issues.”

The patient will continue to receive care aimed at addressing any contributing factors to prevent future UTIs. The case serves as a reminder of the hospital's commitment to precision in diagnostics and comprehensive patient care.
