NIMS Hyderabad Achieves Milestone With 300 Robotic-Assisted Surgeries In Just One Year

This achievement positions NIMS as one of the fastest among government hospitals in India to reach this landmark

NIMS,  a government hospital in Hyderabad, completed 300 robotic-assisted surgeries (RAS) within just one year of acquiring the advanced Da Vinci surgical robot.

In a press statement on Tuesday, the government hospital said that this achievement positions NIMS as one of the fastest among government hospitals in India to reach this landmark.

The robotic-assisted surgeries performed at NIMS span various complex procedures across departments such as Urology, Gastrointestinal Surgery, and Surgical Oncology. The introduction of RAS has notably reduced waiting times for surgeries, transforming the hospital’s approach to patient care.

Dr. Bheerappa Nagari, Director of NIMS Hyderabad, expressed gratitude to the state government for their support. He stated, “Robotics in surgery is revolutionising medical care globally and in India, enhancing clinical outcomes. Our mission is to offer the best treatment options available. Thanks to the advanced technology and support from the Chief Minister of Telangana, Revanth Reddy, and the Minister for Health, Medical & Family Welfare, Science and Technology,  Damodar Rajanarasimha, we can provide cutting-edge treatment to people from all backgrounds.”

Dr. Nagari highlighted that the implementation of robotic technology has significantly decreased post-operative hospital stays and enabled doctors to manage more cases daily. This improvement has led to reduced surgery waiting periods, from months to just a few days. The positive outcomes have generated increased awareness and patient preference for robotic-assisted procedures, he said.

Dr. Rahul Devraj, Professor and Head of the Department of Urology and Coordinator for Robotic Surgery at NIMS, commented, “Government support for modern surgical techniques is crucial in making these advancements accessible to everyone. Robotic-assisted surgery represents a major leap forward in surgical care, offering enhanced precision and reduced recovery times. Our patients have experienced minimal pain and faster recovery, reflecting the benefits of this innovative approach.”

Darla Hutton, Interim GM-India and VP of Commercial Operations – APAC at Intuitive, the makers of the Da Vinci RAS technology, praised NIMS’s achievements. She said, “The integration of the Da Vinci system at NIMS marks a significant advancement in robotic-assisted surgery. It not only enhances the accessibility of this technology but also provides valuable training opportunities for the next generation of surgeons.”

Robotic-assisted surgery, characterised by its minimally invasive nature, allows patients to recover more quickly due to smaller incisions, reduced pain, and fewer complications.
