Rezūm Water Vapor Therapy Reaches Milestone In Treating Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia In India

Boston Scientific has announced the successful completion of its 100th Rezūm Water Vapor Therapy procedure in India, marking a significant milestone in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

Since its introduction in January 2024, this minimally invasive procedure has been utilised to treat BPH patients across various states, including Delhi NCR, Haryana, Punjab, Maharashtra, Gujarat, West Bengal, Kerala, Karnataka, and Telangana, the company informed in a press statement on Thursday.

BPH, a condition characterised by the enlargement of the prostate gland that obstructs urine flow, affects about 50 per cent of men by age 60 and 90 per cent by age 85. Symptoms include difficulty urinating, an inability to completely empty the bladder, and frequent or urgent urination, especially at night. The 100 patients treated in India, aged between 46 and 91, have found relief through the Rezūm System.

Rezūm Water Vapor Therapy employs a transurethral water vapour ablation device to target and reduce excess prostate tissue without incisions, body implants, or ongoing medication. The procedure involves a delivery device inserted along the urethra, releasing water vapour into the prostate. This vapour's energy ablates excess tissue cells, which the body then gradually removes, alleviating BPH symptoms.

The procedure, performed with local anaesthesia, can be done in the office, offering convenience to both doctors and patients. Most patients see symptom improvement within two weeks, with maximum results achieved in three months and a return to regular activities just days after treatment. Patient responses vary, but the procedure’s efficacy and safety have been proven, with sexual function preserved up to five years post-procedure.

Madan R. Krishnan, Vice President and Managing Director of Boston Scientific India Subcontinent, stated, “Boston Scientific has consistently introduced innovative medical technologies in India, addressing urologic conditions like BPH, stress urinary incontinence, and erectile dysfunction. As the first med-tech company to bring water vapour therapy to India for BPH treatment, we are committed to improving patients' quality of life through clinically effective and safe treatments.”

The Rezūm System received approval from the Drug Controller General of India in October 2023.
