Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute and Research Centre (RGCIRC), marked Childhood Cancer Awareness Month by organising a free HPV vaccination camp at its Rohini Centre. The event, named "Celebrating Life," focused on raising awareness about childhood cancer and preventing cervical cancer through vaccination.
India accounts for 20 per cent of the global childhood cancer burden, with approximately 75,000 new cases diagnosed annually. To address this, RGCIRC provided free HPV vaccines to childhood cancer survivors aged 9 to 14, in alignment with global health guidelines. Dr. Gauri Kapoor, Medical Director of RGCIRC Niti Bagh and Director of Pediatric Hematology & Oncology, emphasised the importance of early vaccination. “Vaccinating at a young age offers crucial protection against high-risk HPV types, significantly lowering the chances of developing cervical cancer,” she said.
The camp saw around 250 free doses of the HPV vaccine administered to childhood cancer survivors. The initiative was supported by the Rotary Club of Delhi South, Rotary Club of Delhi South End, Wheel Club Delhi Rajendra Place, and Innerwheel Club of Faridabad Industrial Town, who contributed to the vaccination effort.
While over 80 per cent of childhood cancer patients in high-income countries are cured, the survival rate in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) remains under 30 per cent. Factors such as lack of diagnosis, delayed treatment, and barriers to accessing care contribute to avoidable deaths from childhood cancer in LMICs.
The event welcomed childhood cancer survivors and their families, with vaccinations being provided from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
