Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute and Research Centre (RGCIRC) recently hosted a Pink Walk to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month, aiming to increase awareness of breast cancer, the most common cancer among women in India. The event focused on promoting early detection and building a supportive community for those affected by the disease.
Under the theme "Step Up to Empower Awareness and Save Lives," the 3.5-km walkathon attracted around 200 participants, including breast cancer survivors, doctors, nursing staff, and members of the community, each standing united in solidarity and advocacy. The walk began at the RGCIRC campus in Rohini and was led by senior doctors, including Dr. Sudhir Kumar Rawal, Medical Director, and Dr. Pinky Yadav, Director of Operations & Medical Services, who flagged off the event.
Dr. K.M.M. Vishvak Chanthar, Chief of Breast Surgical Oncology at RGCIRC and chairperson of the event, highlighted the significance of the walk: "This walkathon emphasises the importance of breast cancer awareness and a healthy lifestyle. The participation of survivors serves as an inspiration to others and underscores the message of resilience and early intervention."
The walk brought together participants from different age groups, including both men and women, emphasising that breast cancer awareness extends beyond gender. Dr. Chanthar pointed out, "Breast cancer remains the most common cancer among women in India, with one new case detected every four minutes. Early detection significantly boosts survival rates to as high as 90-95 per cent if diagnosed at stage one. Awareness is critical for everyone."
In addition to the walk, RGCIRC distributed informational pamphlets on breast health, the importance of regular screenings, and guidelines for early detection. The event underscored RGCIRC’s commitment to cancer care, with a focus on proactive health education, screening programs, and the critical role of early diagnosis in saving lives.
