Sarvodaya Hospital, Faridabad, marked a significant achievement in pediatric care by performing India’s youngest cochlear implant surgery on a 5-month-old baby. The procedure, led by Dr. Ravi Bhatia, Director of ENT and Cochlear Implants, restored the baby’s hearing, underscoring the importance of early detection and intervention in congenital hearing impairment.
The baby, born with profound hearing loss, became a candidate for the life-changing surgery after his grandparents noticed his lack of response to common sounds. His condition was confirmed through advanced diagnostic tools, including Tympanometry, Oto-Acoustic Emissions, and imaging studies like CT and MRI.
Dr. Bhatia shared, “At Sarvodaya Hospital, we have successfully performed over 300 cochlear implants, transforming lives with cutting-edge technology and compassionate care. Early detection is crucial, especially in severe cases like this. Cochlear implants enable children to develop speech and language skills, keeping pace with their peers.”
The procedure involves placing a small electronic device inside the ear to bypass damaged areas, directly stimulating the auditory nerve. This innovation allows sound signals to reach the brain, enabling hearing. The cost of treatment ranges from Rs 8-10 lakhs, with provisions for free treatment under government schemes and NGOs for underprivileged families.
Chief Audiologist Raja Suman highlighted the hospital’s comprehensive rehabilitation approach, stating, “Our team closely monitors the child’s auditory development, ensuring optimal progress. This tailored support aims to help the child achieve speech and language milestones effectively.”
