Sterling Hospitals in Rajkot has demonstrated exceptional clinical prowess in treating severe burn injuries. The hospital's surgical team successfully managed the complex treatment of three patients who suffered major burns in a recent blast at a house in Morbi. Among the patients, a 3-year-old boy had 50 to 60 per cent burns, his father sustained 75 per cent burns, and a woman had 90 per cent burns along with other critical injuries. Remarkably, all three patients have been discharged without complications.
Burn injuries covering more than 50 per cent of the body present significant survival challenges, with survival rates for such extensive burns being very low. The successful treatment of all three patients, especially with the woman’s 90 per cent burns, is considered extraordinary. Dr. Mayur Vaghela, a trauma surgeon at Sterling Hospitals, and his team used innovative methods to manage the patients' care effectively.
Dr. Vaghela explained, “Patients with severe burns may require an early tracheostomy to prevent airway obstruction. We have implemented a new technique involving daily eschar removal under anaesthesia, which helps prevent sepsis and infection in major burn cases. This approach has successfully saved numerous patients to date.”
The critical treatment was performed by a multidisciplinary team, including Dr. Sankalp Vanzara (Head of the Department of Critical Care), Dr. Kunal Desai (General Physician and Intensivist), Dr. Krutarth Kanjiya (Infectious Diseases Specialist), and Dr. Urvi Sanghvi (Pediatric Intensivist). Their collective expertise was instrumental in stabilising and reviving the patients.
Raj Kadecha, Zonal Director at Sterling Hospitals, commented, “Our burns unit is managed by a skilled team of medical professionals and trained nursing staff. The hospital is equipped with advanced facilities, including a laparoscopic, trauma, and non-infectious operating theatre with C-100 laminar airflow and HEPA filters. To date, we have successfully treated over 100 patients in our specialised burns unit. This underscores our commitment to clinical excellence and our readiness to handle critical emergencies.”
