STIs ( Sexually Transmitted Infections) are infections ( bacterial , parasitic or viral) which are spread via sexual intercourse

STIs ( Sexually Transmitted Infections) are infections ( bacterial , parasitic or viral) which are spread via sexual intercourse.

How do I know I have an STI ?

The commonest symptom of an STI is off-coloured vaginal discharge ( yellow or greenish) associated with foul odour. Sometimes this can be associated with discharge from the urethra and pain in the lower abdomen. There might or might not be ulcers in the genital area.

Are STIs always dangerous?

The term STIs encompasses easily treatable infections such as Trichomoniasis to more concerning ones like gonorrhoea, syphilis, chlamydia, herpes simplex virus, hepatitis B and HIV.

Most STIs get cured when detected in the initial stages and treated adequately. But when the symptoms are ignored or treated with over-the-counter medications, this leads to the causative organism lingering in the body leading to long-term effects.

What are the long-term effects?

The long-term effects can range from neurological to cardiovascular issues. An untreated, long-standing STI can also lead to problems conceiving along with increased incidence of ectopic pregnancies and stillbirth. They also increase the chance of contracting HIV. The associated stigma and mental abuse adversely affect the quality of life.

How can I prevent an STI?

Using condoms correctly and consistently is the only way of preventing a Sexually transmitted infection. In case of suspicion of STI, screening the patient and partner early can help in preventing complications and reducing transmission. Vaccines are available against HPV ( cervical cancer vaccine ) and Hepatitis B.
