On PCOS Day, QR678, a leading hair science company, unveiled a new study highlighting a significant link between Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) and hair loss. The study, titled Uncovering the Hidden Link: PCOS and Its Impact on Hair Thinning and Loss, was conducted between 2020 and 2024 and involved 150,000 patients treated with QR678's innovative treatment.
The study reveals that 28 per cent of women suffering from female pattern hair loss (FPHL) were diagnosed with PCOS only after starting treatment for their hair issues. This finding suggests that hair loss can often be an early indicator of PCOS. The complex endocrine disorder affects millions of women globally and is associated with symptoms such as irregular menstrual cycles, weight gain, acne, and, notably, hair thinning and loss.
Among the 150,000 patients treated for hair concerns, 30 per cent (45,000) were diagnosed with FPHL. Of these, 28,000 were subsequently found to have PCOS, frequently discovering this diagnosis only after seeking treatment for hair loss. This delayed diagnosis underscores the need for healthcare providers to consider PCOS as a potential cause when addressing hair thinning or loss.
The study highlights the psychological toll of hair loss on women, revealing that 67 per cent reported suffering from depression, while 87% experienced anxiety due to the visible effects of hair thinning. The emotional distress associated with hair loss often exacerbates feelings of isolation and reduces social confidence, leading many women to avoid social interactions and public appearances.
Dr. Rinky Kapoor, Celebrity Dermatologist and Medical Advisor for QR678, emphasised the need for increased awareness and a multidisciplinary approach. “Hair loss in women with PCOS often goes undiagnosed due to a lack of awareness about the condition and its symptoms, leading to delayed treatment and further complications. It’s one of the most distressing symptoms for women with PCOS, affecting their physical appearance and mental well-being. Our study highlights the urgent need for greater awareness and early intervention,” Dr. Kapoor stated.
The report advocates for timely consultations with healthcare professionals at the first signs of hair loss. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are crucial for mitigating the effects of PCOS, preventing further hair loss, and addressing other associated symptoms. Women experiencing symptoms such as irregular periods, weight gain, or acne alongside hair thinning are encouraged to seek medical advice promptly.
