Geri Care Hospital Performs Tamil Nadu’s First Mechanical Thrombectomy Using Inari FlowTriever Device

Geri Care Hospital has achieved a significant medical milestone by performing Tamil Nadu’s first mechanical thrombectomy using the Inari FlowTriever device.

Geri Care Hospital has achieved a significant medical milestone by performing Tamil Nadu’s first mechanical thrombectomy using the Inari FlowTriever device. The breakthrough procedure was successfully conducted on an 85-year-old patient suffering from acute pulmonary embolism (PE), a life-threatening condition requiring prompt intervention to restore blood flow and prevent fatal complications.

Traditional thrombolytic therapy, which utilises clot-dissolving medication, was ruled out in this case due to the high risk of bleeding complications. After careful evaluation, the medical team opted for mechanical thrombectomy using the Veiva’s Inari FlowTriever device. This innovative system is specifically designed for large-vessel venous thrombosis and enables effective clot removal while minimising the risk of bleeding.

The patient has made a remarkable recovery, with symptoms resolved and oxygen levels normalised post-procedure. Notably, no complications or bleeding events were reported, highlighting the safety and efficacy of the intervention.

Dr. Lakshmipathy Ramesh, Founder and Managing Director of Geri Care Health Services, expressed pride in the hospital’s achievement. As he mentioned,“As part of our vision to deliver cutting-edge, multidisciplinary geriatric care, we are committed to adopting the latest innovations and interventions that ensure safety and efficacy for our elderly patients. This successful case, the first of its kind in Tamil Nadu, exemplifies our dedication to enhancing the quality of life for our elders. My heartfelt congratulations to our skilled medical team under the leadership of Dr. Selvakumar, and I am grateful to the families who place their trust in us.”

A Pioneering Approach to Elderly Care

Mechanical thrombectomy, particularly with the Inari FlowTriever® device, represents a transformative approach in managing venous thromboembolism. Unlike traditional thrombolysis, the FlowTriever® system employs mechanical engagement for rapid clot removal, making it especially suitable for high-risk patients with contraindications for thrombolytic medications.

Dr. Selvakumar Chinakkanan, Senior Interventional Cardiologist at Geri Care Hospital, remarked on the procedure’s significance. He said, “This case of pulmonary embolism presented unique challenges, particularly given the bleeding risks associated with conventional treatments. The use of the Inari FlowTriever® device underscores the potential of mechanical thrombectomy in managing critical cases safely and effectively. It is a privilege to be part of this medical advancement and to offer life-saving treatment options for our patients.”
