Fortis Hospital Bannerghatta Road Performs Complex Robotic Kidney Transplant Surgeries

These surgeries were performed on an 11-year-old boy from Yemen and a 34-year-old man from Bengaluru, both suffering from end-stage kidney disease

Fortis Hospital Bannerghatta Road in Bengaluru has achieved a significant clinical milestone with the successful completion of two complex Robotic Kidney Transplant Surgeries. These surgeries were performed on an 11-year-old boy from Yemen and a 34-year-old man from Bengaluru, both suffering from end-stage kidney disease.

Led by  Mohan Keshavamurthy, Senior Director of Urology, Uro-Oncology, Uro-Gynaecology, Andrology, Transplant, and Robotic Surgery, along with Manjunath S, Consultant-Nephrology, a multidisciplinary team of doctors conducted the life-changing procedures. The surgeries offered renewed hope to both patients battling end-stage kidney disease.

In the first case, 11-year-old Ahmed, diagnosed with Steroid Resistant Nephrotic Syndrome (SRNS), was admitted with stage five chronic kidney disease. Due to medical complications, Ahmed's parents couldn't serve as donors. However, his aunt generously came forward to donate her kidney. The team performed a Robot-assisted Laparoscopic Live Related Renal Transplant Surgery, leading to Ahmed's discharge just five days post-surgery.

The second case involved Chetan, a 34-year-old software engineer with a history of hypertension and Solitary Kidney. His father, aged 74, volunteered to donate his kidney despite concerns related to age. Following dialysis, Chetan underwent a Robot-assisted Laparoscopic Live-Related Renal Transplant surgery and was discharged successfully after five days.

Keshavamurthy emphasised the significance of robot-aided surgery, highlighting its precision, reduced trauma, and faster recovery times.  Manjunath S underscored the challenges presented by the patient's medical histories and donor constraints, managed through a multidisciplinary approach and innovative surgical techniques.

Akshay Oleti, Business Head of Fortis Hospitals Bengaluru, congratulated the medical team for their dedication and expertise. He wished both patients a swift recovery.
