A nationwide survey conducted by DocTube, a platform for doctor-led health education, has shed light on how Indians manage constipation, particularly during the winter months. The study, undertaken as part of Constipation Awareness Month, analysed responses from over 5,000 individuals across cities such as Mumbai, Kolkata, Delhi, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Patna, Lucknow, and Indore.
The findings revealed a range of practices adopted by Indians, from traditional remedies to lifestyle adjustments, but also highlighted significant gaps in awareness and proactive management.
Key Findings of the Survey
Isabgol (psyllium husk) usage: A notable 32 per cent of respondents reported relying on Isabgol to ease bowel movements. This traditional remedy remains a popular choice for its natural fibre content and ease of use.
Winter and Constipation: A Common Struggle
The survey highlighted the role of seasonal factors in exacerbating constipation. Reduced water intake during colder months emerged as a key contributor, with many individuals failing to stay adequately hydrated. This, combined with dietary changes and reduced physical activity during winter, often leads to digestive issues.
Need for Awareness and Intervention
The varied approaches to managing constipation, as revealed by the survey, underscore the necessity of spreading awareness about effective and sustainable solutions. While remedies such as Isabgol and lifestyle changes are beneficial, reliance on over-the-counter laxatives or neglecting the issue entirely can have long-term health implications.
The findings point to the need for education around holistic and preventive measures, such as maintaining hydration, consuming fibre-rich foods, and incorporating regular physical activity into daily routines.
