In observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, HCG Manavata Cancer Centre (HCGMCC), Nashik’s leading cancer specialty hospital, is organising a special event called ‘Pink Mela.’
The event, scheduled for October 26, 2024, is aimed at raising awareness about the rising incidence of breast cancer in India. Women above the age of 20 are invited to participate in free consultations, live demonstrations, and medical history reviews, including physical examinations if required.
Throughout the month, HCGMCC is offering mammography tests at a significantly reduced fee of Rs. 550, down from the regular Rs. 7,150, along with Pap smear tests at discounted rates. A dedicated team of doctors will be present at the event to assist attendees with breast cancer screenings and answer questions regarding breast health.
“Breast cancer represents nearly 30 per cent of all cancer cases among women in India, making it the most prevalent cancer affecting women across the country. The risk of breast cancer increases significantly for women in their 50s and 60s, but early detection and regular screenings can improve the chances of survival by 80 per cent. Unfortunately, many cases are diagnosed at later stages due to the lack of awareness and early screening programs. The 'Pink Mela' initiative is a step towards educating women on the importance of early detection,” said Dr. Raj Nagarkar, MD & Chief of Surgical Oncology & Robotic Services, HCGMCC.
Breast cancer typically begins in the cells of the breast and grows uncontrollably, forming a mass or lump. While primarily affecting women, men can also be diagnosed with breast cancer. Highlighting the importance of advanced treatments, Dr. Nagarkar recently performed the world’s first robotic-assisted nipple-sparing mastectomy (RNSM), showcasing the hospital’s commitment to innovative surgical care.
“Several factors contribute to an increased risk of breast cancer, including late pregnancies, family history, hormonal changes, and lifestyle habits like smoking and stress. Our goal with the 'Pink Mela' is to promote preventive care and routine screenings, especially for women at higher risk. The event will help encourage women to schedule regular check-ups and empower them with the knowledge to protect their health,” concluded Dr. Nagarkar.
