At the Raksha Summit 2024, Medi Assist Healthcare Services, India's leading Health Benefits Administrator, and Boston Consulting Group (BCG) unveiled a groundbreaking framework for "Borderless Health," designed to bring universal, high-quality, and accessible healthcare to every Indian by 2047. This initiative aligns with India's vision of becoming a "Viksit Bharat" or Developed India by the year 2047.
The Borderless Health framework aims to eliminate healthcare disparities by creating a data-driven, technology-enabled model for delivering healthcare services. At the core of this new approach is the "Health JAM Trinity," which consists of three key components: Joined Health Data, Automation, and Mobile-Enabled Healthcare. These pillars will enable more efficient, equitable, and accessible healthcare services across India.
The Health JAM Trinity combines digital health data, AI-driven automation for claims processing, personalised healthcare packages, and on-demand access to healthcare services, revolutionising how care is delivered. According to the Borderless Health report, achieving universal cashless healthcare by 2047 will require coordinated efforts and collaboration among healthcare providers, insurers, employers, and policymakers.
Alpesh Shah, Lead - CEO Advisory APAC at BCG, highlighted the importance of uniting various stakeholders to make this vision a reality, stating, “We need to galvanise collective action to ensure equitable access to healthcare and empower every Indian with quality care. This effort involves transforming healthcare delivery, particularly through AI and digital solutions.”
The report also outlines key milestones to be achieved by 2040, such as reaching 90 per cent universal health insurance coverage by 2035 and deploying a fully interoperable health data system. Medi Assist and BCG emphasise that achieving these targets will be critical to providing seamless healthcare access for all citizens.
Medi Assist CEO Satish Gidugu expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “In a world without borders, true healthcare progress is not just about access—it's about ensuring that every individual, regardless of their location, has on-demand access to health and wellness services. Our Borderless Health vision aims to build a resilient, equitable healthcare system for generations to come.”
The Borderless Health framework introduces three vectors of health benefits delivery to cater to different segments of the population:
G2C (Government to Citizen): Focuses on expanding government-backed schemes like Ayushman Bharat to include preventive and chronic care.
E2E (Employer to Employee): Encourages employers to offer comprehensive group health insurance plans.
B2C (Business to Customer): Promotes personalised retail health insurance plans for broader coverage.
The future of healthcare, according to the Borderless Health framework, involves a data-driven approach. By harnessing the power of the Patient 360 platform—designed to capture and analyse patient data—India can transform its healthcare system, making it more efficient, transparent, and patient-centric. This platform, along with the Health JAM Trinity, will provide seamless access to healthcare services across socio-economic and geographic boundaries.
