In recognition of World Heart Day, Medicover Hospitals, Navi Mumbai, conducted a hands-on CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) training session at Kharghar and Panvel railway stations. The initiative aimed to equip commuters with life-saving skills to respond effectively to cardiac emergencies, such as heart attacks and sudden cardiac arrest.
Led by Dr. Abhijit Sawant, Consultant and Head of the Accident and Emergency Department, the session lasted one hour and involved the use of mannequin dolls for practical demonstration. Hundreds of commuters participated in the training, learning crucial techniques such as chest compressions and rescue breaths. Participants also committed to becoming good Samaritans, ready to intervene during medical emergencies.
The rising incidence of cardiovascular disease in India, affecting not only the elderly but also younger individuals, underscores the importance of such initiatives. Factors including a sedentary lifestyle, poor diet, smoking, high stress, and comorbidities like hypertension and obesity are contributing to the increase in heart-related incidents, especially among the youth. The need for immediate action has become critical, with many people relying on local trains—often referred to as the 'Life Line'—for daily transport.
Dr. Tamiruddin Danwade, Consultant Interventional Cardiologist, emphasised the importance of CPR during cardiac emergencies, particularly within the "golden hour" after a heart attack, when quick intervention can significantly increase the chances of survival. The training session also included an informative discussion on the symptoms, treatment, and prevention of heart diseases.
By holding the event at busy railway stations, Medicover Hospitals hopes to empower the general public with the knowledge to act quickly during cardiac emergencies, potentially saving lives.
