In the run-up to World Osteoporosis Day on October 20, Star Health and Allied Insurance, India’s leading standalone health insurer, has launched a nationwide awareness campaign to highlight the dangers of osteoporosis. The campaign is particularly focused on women, who account for 69 per cent of diagnosed osteoporosis cases in India, and aims to promote early diagnosis and preventive care.

As part of this initiative, Star Health will offer free bone scans in 46 cities across India, including major metros like Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Bangalore, on October 19, 2024. These bone scans will be complemented by wellness camps providing nutritional advice, consultations with healthcare professionals, and educational resources on osteoporosis prevention and management.

Anand Roy, MD & CEO of Star Health Insurance, commented on the initiative, saying, “Osteoporosis is the most common bone disease, affecting 1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men over the age of 50. Through this campaign, we aim to provide tools for early detection and empower individuals to take proactive steps in managing their bone health. By offering free bone scans and running awareness camps nationwide, we seek to reduce the long-term impact of osteoporosis and enhance the quality of life for those at risk. This initiative aligns with Star Health’s broader focus on preventive healthcare and our mission to build a healthier Bharat.”

Osteoporosis in India: A Growing Concern

Osteoporosis, a condition that weakens bones and increases the risk of fractures, often goes undiagnosed until significant damage has occurred, particularly among women. Due to age-related hormonal changes, women are at a higher risk of developing osteoporosis, and many do not receive a diagnosis until after they suffer a fracture. These fractures can lead to long-term disability and significantly diminish quality of life.

Between FY 2015 and the first half of FY 2025, Star Health processed 1,566 osteoporosis-related claims, with women accounting for the majority of cases. These statistics underline the urgent need for greater public awareness, early diagnosis, and preventive measures, especially for women, who are disproportionately affected by the condition.

Campaign Highlights

Free Bone Scans: Star Health will offer free bone scans in 46 cities across India on October 19, including major metros like Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Bangalore.

  • Wellness Camps: Alongside the scans, 50 wellness camps will provide nutritional guidance, consultations with healthcare professionals, and educational sessions on osteoporosis prevention and treatment.
  • Focus on Women’s Health: The campaign highlights the fact that women are more likely to be affected by osteoporosis, accounting for 69 per cent of the cases processed by Star Health.
  • Call to Action: The public is urged to "step up for bone health" by adopting regular exercise routines, maintaining bone-healthy diets, and making lifestyle changes to prevent bone deterioration.

Osteoporosis, often referred to as a "silent disease," can remain undetected for years until a fracture occurs. It primarily affects post-menopausal women, but men are increasingly at risk as well. Star Health’s awareness and screening campaign aims to tackle the lack of early diagnosis and encourage preventive care among all demographic groups.

This year's campaign urges individuals to take charge of their bone health by incorporating regular exercise, eating calcium-rich foods, and adopting healthier lifestyles. The campaign’s slogan, "Step Up for Bone Health," is a rallying cry to emphasize the importance of early intervention and sustained preventive care.

Osteoporosis is a global issue, but in India, its prevalence is on the rise, particularly among post-menopausal women. The disease carries substantial health, social, and economic burdens. For women, fractures due to osteoporosis can result in complications such as loss of independence, reduced mobility, and a heightened risk of future fractures.

Star Health’s 2024 campaign on World Osteoporosis Day reflects its ongoing commitment to preventive healthcare and its dedication to raising awareness about critical health issues. The free bone scans and educational resources offered through this initiative will help individuals take proactive steps toward maintaining strong, healthy bones.
