Apollo Cancer Centres (ACCs), under the initiative of Apollo Athenia—India's pioneering centre for women’s health, held a Breast Cancer Awareness Yoga Event today at Nehru Park in New Delhi. Part of the ACCs’ #TalkPink campaign, the event aimed to underscore the significant role that holistic healing and practices like yoga play in the fight against breast cancer. This initiative reflects ACCs’ ongoing commitment to integrate wellness practices with medical care, supporting patients in their journey to recovery while encouraging healthier, holistic lifestyles.
The event saw a turnout of over 800 participants, including 250 cancer patients and over 100 doctors, joined by survivors and wellness advocates who highlighted the positive effects of yoga on emotional and physical recovery for breast cancer patients. The gathering demonstrated the power of integrative wellness practices like yoga to improve patients' quality of life, resilience, and flexibility during recovery.
The Chief Guest, H.E. Freddy Svane, Ambassador of Denmark to India, inaugurated the event and praised Apollo Cancer Centres for their dedication to advancing integrative healthcare approaches. "In Denmark, holistic health, including yoga, is acknowledged as essential in cancer care, enhancing both physical and mental well-being. It’s inspiring to witness Apollo Athenia's dedication to creating spaces of support for those impacted by breast cancer. This initiative represents our shared commitment to fostering communities of healing and hope," said Svane.
The event featured a Chair Yoga session led by the renowned yoga expert, Sourabh Bothra. Designed especially for cancer patients and survivors, the session focused on gentle poses and breathing exercises tailored to boost recovery, increase flexibility, and support emotional well-being.
Breast cancer is currently the most common type of cancer affecting women worldwide, accounting for 23 per cent of all cases. Projections estimate that global cases will exceed 2 million by 2030, with significant contributions from developing countries. In India, breast cancer incidences are notably high in the Northeast and major cities, emphasising the need for awareness and accessible care.
Dr. Geeta Kadayaprath, Senior Consultant - Breast Surgery at Apollo Cancer Centre, New Delhi, emphasised the importance of the event in promoting both awareness and holistic recovery. “This Chair Yoga event amplifies the conversation around breast cancer, spotlighting the role of yoga in recovery. At Apollo Women’s Cancer Centre, we are dedicated to providing world-class care and compassionate support that nurtures the whole person. Today’s gathering is a celebration of strength and resilience, inspiring early detection and holistic wellness as part of the healing journey.”
Ritu Kapoor, currently undergoing chemotherapy following her bilateral breast cancer surgery at Apollo Cancer Centres, shared how yoga has played a vital role in her recovery. “Yoga has been my anchor in these challenging times, providing strength, calm, and hope. This event reminds me that healing goes beyond surgery; it’s about nurturing my body, mind, and spirit. I’m grateful for this supportive community,” said Kapoor.
