Survey Highlights Winter Constipation Practices Across India: 23 Per Cent Do Nothing

A recent pan-India survey conducted by DocTube, doctor-led health education, has shed light on how people across the country manage constipation during the winter months.

A recent pan-India survey conducted by DocTube, doctor-led health education, has shed light on how people across the country manage constipation during the winter months. The survey, which involved over 5,000 respondents from cities such as Mumbai, Kolkata, Delhi, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Patna, Lucknow, and Indore, revealed a wide range of practices, with significant gaps in awareness and intervention.

Key Survey Insights

  • 32 per cent of respondents rely on Isabgol (psyllium husk) to ease bowel movements.
  • 19 per cent turn to over-the-counter laxatives for relief.
  • 10 per cent prefer ayurvedic churnas as a natural solution.
  • 16 per cent address the issue through lifestyle changes, such as modifying their diet, exercising, or practising yoga.
  • A surprising 23 per cent admitted doing nothing to tackle constipation, even when experiencing symptoms.

The survey highlighted that reduced water intake during colder months significantly contributes to constipation. While some individuals adopt easily accessible remedies like Isabgol or make lifestyle changes, a notable portion either neglects the issue or turns to methods that may lack long-term effectiveness.

This data underscores the need to promote awareness about proactive and holistic strategies for digestive health, particularly during the winter season, when the risk of constipation increases. Experts recommend maintaining hydration, incorporating fibre-rich foods into the diet, and regular physical activity to prevent and manage constipation effectively.

The findings call for a greater focus on education around digestive health and the promotion of sustainable practices to improve overall well-being.
