CoWIN Data Breach: Details Like Adhaar No., Passport No., Available On Telegram

In a shocking development, a major data breach has slipped through the radar of the central government, the CoWIN data entered by virtually every Indian who took a vaccine shot is freely available over the Telegram messenger, claimed reports in the media on Monday.

The data includes mobile numbers, Aadhaar numbers, Passport numbers, Voter IDs, and details of family members which have been leaked on the messaging application.

As per the reports in the media, the details were accessed through a telegram bot that provides all the details once the mobile number or the Adhaar number is fed into the system.

In a Twitter post the spokesperson of Trinamool Congress, Saket Gokhale revealed that the details of many politicians, journalists and Rajya Sabha MPs among others were leaked on Telegram.

Details of the likes of Rajya Sabha MP and TMC Leader Derek O'Brien, Former Union Minister P. Chidambaram, Congress leaders Jairam Ramesh and K.C. Venugopal were also accessible on the app.

"The personal details of LITERALLY EVERY INDIAN who got a Covid-19 vaccination are freely available on this leaked database. The question is, how did personal details incl passport no, Aadhaar no., etc. get leaked when Modi Govt claims it follows "strong data security"?," Gokhale said in a Twitter post.

In his Twitter post, Gokhale called this a matter of serious national concern and asked further why is the Modi government including the Home Ministry is unaware of the leak and why haven't Indians been informed about a data breach. "Who has the Modi government given access to sensitive personal data of Indians including Aadhaar and Passport numbers which enabled this leak?," he asked.
