The Delhi Government has started preparing for the third wave of COVID-19. It has authorized around 45 Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) oxygen plants. Its capacity of holding oxygen is about 55.46 metric tonnes. They are on hand preparations to combat such a huge health crisis in National Capital Territory (NCT).
Installation of PSA plants
According to the Delhi government officials, about 160 PSA plants having capacity of 148.11 metric tons have been successfully installed by them in various government and private hospitals. Also, around sixty-six oxygen plants have been placed in government hospitals of Delhi while ten are set up at the central government hospitals. Also, eighty-four plants have been given to various private healthcare facilitators.
Categorization of oxygen plants
The government said that forty-five plants having a capacity of 55.46 metric tons have already been commissioned by them. Out of them, 18 plants having capacity of 21.06 metric tons are going to be authorized by 15th August 2021.
The oxygen cylinders having a capacity of 9.29 metric tons are going to be under government authorization by 31st August 2021. Around four Liquid Medical Oxygen (LMO) tanks have been successfully planted in the city already. Their capacity is about 221 metric tons.
Why is it necessary?
The Chief Minister of Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal had been accused of a shortage of oxygen cylinders in Delhi. It is reported that about 21 critical COVID-19 patients had died at the Jaipur Golden Hospital in northwest Delhi due to an acute shortage of such cylinders. Also, other 8 patients have lost their lives due to oxygen shortage.
Hence, the cabinet ministers of Delhi Govt decided to give authorization to such oxygen plants. They have approved a policy under which various incentives and subsidies will be given to set up oxygen plants and storage facilities. It will improve the life-saving gas capacity of Delhi.
About tender
A tender has been floated by Delhi government for the installation of 3 more LMO tanks having 150 metric tons capacity. Also, 2 cryogenic bottling plants of around 13.4 metric tons capacity will be given authorization by 15th September. These will be enough to refill around 1,400 oxygen cylinders in a day.

So to combat this crisis, the Delhi government has planned to increase the capacity of life-saving gas in various health institutes including central, government and private hospitals. Such preparations is the need of the hour so that more and more patients could be saved in this health crisis.
