Experts Warn Indians Of Silent Threats Like Fatty Liver Disease

The disease, often asymptomatic until it progresses to severe stages like cirrhosis or liver cancer, is exacerbated by prevalent genetic predispositions to insulin resistance among Indians

Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) poses a significant health risk to Indians, affecting anywhere from 9 per cent to 53 per cent of the population, according to studies highlighted by experts at Amrita Hospital, Faridabad.

In a press statement on Monday, the healthcare services provider  further said that this disease, often asymptomatic until it progresses to severe stages like cirrhosis or liver cancer, is exacerbated by prevalent genetic predispositions to insulin resistance among Indians.

Bhaskar Nandi, Head of Gastroenterology at Amrita Hospital, explained, “NAFLD manifests silently and can lead to serious complications such as cirrhosis, liver cancer, and even necessitate liver transplants. Obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidaemia—collectively known as metabolic syndrome—are major contributing factors. Lifestyle modifications, including alcohol abstinence, weight reduction through diet and exercise, and regular medical screenings, are crucial for managing and preventing NAFLD.”

He emphasised, “Patients must adopt a hypocaloric Indian diet, rich in fruits, vegetables, and legumes while reducing sugar, fried foods, and excessive fats. Physical activity involving cardio and resistance training is also recommended to improve outcomes.”

NAFLD not only affects liver health but also increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases, strokes, kidney disorders, and certain cancers beyond the liver. Thus, effective management of metabolic disorders and regular health screenings are essential components of NAFLD treatment.

Amrita Hospital has launched a dedicated Liver Clinic to address this growing public health concern comprehensively, the press statement informed. The clinic, staffed by hepatologists, liver surgeons, dieticians, and counsellors, focuses on early diagnosis, treatment, and prevention strategies for NAFLD.

The integration of NAFLD into India’s National Program on Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Disease, and Stroke by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare underscores the importance of raising awareness and taking proactive measures against this prevalent health issue.
