In a remarkable medical feat, doctors at Fortis Hospital, Noida, successfully removed a watermelon-sized, non-cancerous tumour weighing 2.2 kilograms from a 49-year-old woman using robot-aided surgery.
The hospital in a press statement on Monday informed that the complex procedure, which lasted three hours, was led by Anjana Singh, Director & HOD of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Fortis Noida. The patient was discharged in stable condition two days after the surgery.
The patient, who had been experiencing severe menstrual pain and heavy bleeding for nearly two years, had previously been advised to undergo traditional open surgery. An ultrasound revealed a large fibroid measuring 17-18 cm, along with additional fibroids of 7-8 cm. Given the size of the tumour, which occupied the entire abdominal area, and the patient's history of two previous C-sections with vertical scars, the team opted for robot-assisted surgery to minimise risks and enhance precision.
Anjana Singh explained, “The patient came to us from Aligarh after being advised against robotic surgery elsewhere. The tumour’s size made it crucial to operate with precision to avoid damaging vital organs. Robot-assisted surgery allowed us to perform the procedure with minimal bleeding and no need for blood transfusion. We had to carefully break down the tumour inside the abdomen and remove it through tiny incisions, which presented significant challenges.”
Singh highlighted the importance of timely intervention, noting that delaying the surgery could have led to the tumour growing further, potentially causing bowel and bladder pressure, increased menstrual bleeding, and severe anaemia. She added, “Such large tumours are rare, and only 10-20 per cent of cases involve tumours weighing 2.2 kg or more. In 1 per cent of these cases, a fibroid can become malignant.”
Mohit Singh, Zonal Director at Fortis Hospital Noida, praised the team’s expertise and the success of the surgery. “This was a critical case, complicated by the tumour’s size and the patient’s surgical history. The successful outcome reflects our commitment to providing top-tier medical care and achieving excellent results.”
