Royal Philips, a global leader in health technology, has unveiled the India findings of its Future Health Index (FHI) 2024 report titled ‘Better Care for More People: Bridging Gaps in Healthcare.’ The report highlights how Indian healthcare leaders are leveraging advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI) and virtual care, to mitigate workforce shortages and improve healthcare delivery.

Based on data from nearly 3,000 respondents across 14 countries, including India, the report sheds light on the transformative steps healthcare leaders are taking to optimise patient outcomes, enhance data integration, and overcome staffing challenges.

Addressing Staffing Challenges

A growing and ageing population has exacerbated workforce shortages in India, with 64 per cent of healthcare leaders reporting rising instances of burnout and mental health issues among staff. These shortages are also affecting patients, with over half of the leaders citing reduced time spent with patients and 20 per cent identifying this as a critical issue.

To address these gaps, Indian healthcare leaders are turning to digital solutions, particularly virtual care. An overwhelming 94 per cent believe virtual care helps ease staffing pressures by enabling remote consultations and fostering collaboration across locations.

Harnessing Data for Better Care

Indian healthcare leaders see immense potential in data-driven insights, with 99 per cent acknowledging its role in improving care quality. However, data integration remains a challenge for 90 per cent of respondents, with nearly 38 per cent reporting time lost in accessing or integrating data, increasing operational costs and risks to patient safety.

Generative AI is emerging as a key solution, with 93 per cent of healthcare leaders already investing or planning to invest in it within the next three years to unlock efficiencies and derive actionable insights from patient data.

Fostering Collaboration for Sustainability

The report underscores the importance of cross-sector collaboration, with 52 per cent of healthcare leaders viewing health technology companies as vital partners for integration and interoperability. Additionally, 48 per cent are exploring innovative business models, such as community health centres, to enhance accessibility while managing costs sustainably.

Commitment to Innovation

Commenting on the findings, Bharath Sesha, Managing Director of Philips Indian Subcontinent, said, "Indian healthcare leaders are navigating critical challenges, including staff shortages, data integration, and financial pressures. By embracing technologies like AI and automation, they are rethinking traditional care models to create an integrated, patient-centred system. At Philips India, we remain committed to enabling better patient outcomes through cutting-edge solutions.”

The findings of the Future Health Index 2024 underline the resolve of Indian healthcare leaders to transform the system through innovation, collaboration, and technology, ensuring better care for more people across the country.
