KG Hospital, a leading multispecialty healthcare facility in Coimbatore, made history by successfully performing India's first-ever robotic-assisted suture-less aortic valve replacement surgery.
In a press statement on Tuesday, the hospital informed that this procedure, utilising advanced Da Vinci technology, marks a significant milestone in cardiac surgery and underscores the hospital's commitment to innovation and patient care excellence.
Led by Dr Arun Kumar, a distinguished cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon at KG Hospital, the robotic-assisted surgery was performed on a 74-year-old male patient diagnosed with Aortic Valve Stenosis. The patient's condition had progressively worsened over two years, leading to symptoms such as palpitations and exertion, indicating a risk of heart failure. With severe calcification complicating the condition, traditional surgical approaches posed challenges, making robotic-assisted surgery the preferred option. Dr Arun Kumar highlighted the complexities of the case, emphasising the importance of precision and safety in valve placement.
Utilising the 3D dexterity and magnified imaging capabilities of the da Vinci surgical system, the surgical team successfully implanted the prosthetic valve with guiding sutures, ensuring optimal positioning and minimising the risk of future complications. "We are proud to have performed this pioneering surgery, which demonstrates the potential of robotic-assisted procedures in enhancing patient outcomes," said Dr Arun Kumar.
"The advantages of robotic-assisted surgery, including reduced scarring, blood loss, and post-operative complications, offer significant benefits to patients, particularly those with complex cardiac conditions,” he added.
Robotic-assisted surgery offers numerous advantages over traditional approaches, including increased precision, clarity of imaging, and faster recovery times.
