New drug delivery system for Rheumatoid arthritis which will cut the side-effects of the drug
Indian scientists out with a new way to deliver arthritis drug into the body, the new treatment was developed after a team at Lovely Professional University conducted a study to give a new lease of life to the arthritis drug Sulfapyridine for its anti-arthritic potential.
Rheumatoid Arthritis affects joints, connective tissues, muscles, tendons, and fibrous tissue. It tends to strike during the most productive years of adulthood between the ages of 20 and 40, and is a chronic disabling condition that often causes pain and deformity. In India, around 13 lac people are affected by it.
Side Effects of the drug
The drug taken in long-term to help with the disease can have side effects such as nausea/vomiting, rashes, dizziness, anxiety and abdominal pain.
The team developed a prodrug of sulfapyridine and then incorporated it into an innovative delivery system.
How does the delivery system work?
The prodrug treatment is administered by injecting the affected area of the patient; and not through oral consumption. This means that the medication only remains in the affected area, without spreading to the rest of the body.
The team is done with the trials and testing of the delivery system. Without wasting any time the patents in India have already been filed and they plan on applying for international patents as well.
