A new analysis of thyroid testing data from Mahajan Imaging and Labs is alarming. The analysis reveals that one-third of all thyroid tests conducted in the Delhi region over the past six months have abnormal results. The study, which reviewed data from 35,000 tests, also highlighted a significant gender disparity, with women disproportionately affected. According to the report, 75 per cent of abnormal results were found in females, with a male-to-female ratio of 1:2.
The most affected group falls within the 22-40 age range, suggesting that younger adults are increasingly susceptible to thyroid issues, likely due to modern lifestyle factors such as stress, poor diet, and lack of physical activity. This demographic appears to be particularly at risk, and health experts are calling for greater public awareness and intervention.
Emphasising on the importance of regular screening, Dr Shelly Mittal Mahajan, Lab Director & Clinical Lead at Mahajan Imaging Labs said, “Thyroid health is essential for overall well-being. Our data shows that a significant number of young adults are experiencing abnormal thyroid function, yet many are not addressing it. We urge everyone, particularly those with symptoms or a history of thyroid issues, to be proactive about getting tested."
The report noted that 33 per cent of individuals tested received abnormal results, yet the total number of people seeking thyroid tests has remained steady over the past six months. This indicates a potential gap in public awareness regarding thyroid disorders, which often go undiagnosed due to subtle symptoms like fatigue, weight fluctuations, and mood changes.
Health experts are calling for increased education and public outreach about the importance of thyroid health, particularly for those with a family history of the disorder. Early detection and proper treatment are crucial for managing thyroid problems effectively.
In response, healthcare providers and organisations are launching awareness campaigns aimed at encouraging more individuals to seek regular thyroid testing and medical advice. The growing prevalence of thyroid issues, particularly among women and young adults, underscores the urgent need for proactive health measures in the community.
