Sir Ganga Ram Hospital Achieves Milestone In Liver Transplantation

More than 50 per cent of liver transplants in this country are performed by surgeons who have worked at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital

Sir Ganga Ram Hospital (SGRH) has cemented its reputation as a leader in liver transplantation in India, with over 50 per cent of the country’s liver transplants performed by surgeons trained at the hospital. In a press statement on Wednesday, Dr D.S. Rana, Chairman of the Sir Ganga Ram Trust Society, proudly highlighted this achievement, crediting the Gyan Burman Liver Unit for its remarkable contributions to medical expertise and education.

"We are very proud to have the Gyan Burman Liver Unit as an integral part of the hospital," said Dr Rana. “It has done sterling work in training young surgeons, publishing books and papers on liver diseases, and helping establish liver transplantation in India. It is estimated that more than 50 per cent of the liver transplants in this country are performed by surgeons who have worked at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital.”

The unit’s achievements include the publication of over 100 articles, the Annual Audit books of the Department, a Residents' Manual, a 'Liver Transplant Handbook for Patients,' and an open-access book that has been downloaded 1.6 million times. The Gyan Burman Liver Fund has also enabled surgical trainees to attend conferences globally, including at Johns Hopkins Hospital in the USA.

The impact of the Gyan Burman Liver Fund on India's liver transplant program is profound. Since its first national meeting in 2003, the number of liver transplant centres in India has grown to 184, with 3,500 transplants performed in 2022, making India the third largest in the world for liver transplants.

Dr Ajay Swaroop, Chairman of the Board of Management at SGRH, emphasised the hospital’s commitment to medical education and technology. "Sir Ganga Ram Hospital is constantly involved in improving learning at various levels and promoting cutting-edge medical technology for looking after all strata of society. The Gyan Burman Foundation is associated with us to promote scientific work on liver diseases and liver transplantation."

This year's prestigious 9th Gyan Burman Oration will be delivered by Nobel Laureate Prof. Abhijit Banerjee at the India International Centre in New Delhi. His speech, titled "Markets for Healthcare," will explore the economic systems involved in healthcare transactions.

Previous oration speakers include notable figures such as Prof Henri Bismuth from France, Dr Yuman Fong and Dr Abhinav Humar from the USA, Prof S. T. Fan from Hong Kong, Sir Roy Calne from the UK, Prof Pierre A Clavien from Switzerland, Prof Dirk J Gouma from Amsterdam, and Patrick Kamath from the Mayo Clinic, USA.
