World’s First International Conference On Pediatric Heart Valve Repairs Held In Karnataka

The event included detailed discussions on the anatomical understanding, diagnosis, and management of various heart valves, including mitral, aortic, tricuspid, pulmonary, and common AV valve repairs in children

The Sri Madhusudan Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (SMSIMSR), in partnership with the Paediatric Cardiac Society of India (PCSI) and the Indian Association of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeons (IACTS),  hosted the world’s first International Conference on Pediatric Heart Valve Repairs. 

The institute in a press statement on Monday informed that held on July 19 and 20, 2024, at the Ataee Shaw Lecture Hall, Sathya Sai Grama, Muddenahalli, Karnataka, the hybrid event drew over 100 doctors from around the globe.

Under the leadership of Organising Chairman Professor  A. Kalangos and Organising Secretary Dr C S Hiremath, the conference offered a unique platform for cardiothoracic surgeons, cardiologists, imaging specialists, and other healthcare professionals to exchange knowledge and engage in hands-on training. The conference focused on the complexities of congenital cardiac valve defects and set new standards in pediatric cardiac care.

The event included detailed discussions on the anatomical understanding, diagnosis, and management of various heart valves, including mitral, aortic, tricuspid, pulmonary, and common AV valve repairs in children. A hands-on wet lab workshop demonstrated advanced valve repair techniques and explored innovative solutions for complex cases, emerging technologies, and long-term outcomes in pediatric valve surgery.

Dr C S Hiremath, Senior Consultant and Chief Cardiac Surgeon at SMSIMSR, emphasised the significance of understanding congenital cardiac valves for advancing pediatric cardiac care. “This conference brings together global expertise to enhance our understanding and treatment of pediatric heart valve conditions. By sharing insights and innovations, we aim to improve outcomes for young patients worldwide,” he said.

Sadguru Sri Madhusudan Sai, Founder of SMSIMSR, underscored the institute’s commitment to advancing pediatric cardiac care. “This conference highlights our dedication to pushing the boundaries of medical excellence and ensuring optimal care for every child,” he stated.

Notable attendees included Dr K M Cherian, Doyen of Cardiac Surgery in India; Prof Dr Minu Bajpai, Executive Director of the National Board of Examinations, Delhi; Dr Krishna Subramony Iyer, Executive Director of Pediatric Cardio Thoracic Vascular Surgery at Fortis Hospital, Delhi; Dr Suresh Rao, Senior Pediatric Cardiac Surgeon at Kokilaben Hospital, Mumbai; Dr K R Balakrishnan, Director at the Institute of Heart and Lung Transplant and Mechanical Circulatory Support, Chennai; Dr Shaun Setty, Senior Pediatric Cardiac Surgeon from the USA; and Dr Sivakumar Sivalingam, Senior Pediatric Cardiac Surgeon from Malaysia, the press statement added.
