A 55-year-old woman with a life-threatening brain aneurysm was successfully treated using an advanced stenting method at Apex Multi Speciality Hospital in Borivali. Vahida Bano, a resident of Powai, experienced a sudden and severe headache described as the worst of her life, along with vomiting and loss of consciousness. She was initially taken to a local hospital before being admitted under the care of Dr. Vivek Patel, a neurosurgeon at Apex Multi Speciality Hospital.
A CT scan revealed that Bano had suffered a Sub-Arachnoid Hemorrhage due to the rupture of an aneurysm in the posterior communicating artery (PComm). An aneurysm is a bulge in a blood vessel caused by the weakening of the vessel wall, often likened to a berry hanging on a stem. Ruptures of brain aneurysms can cause severe headaches, nausea, strokes, and even death.
Dr. Vivek Patel performed a 4-vessel Cerebral Angiography, also known as DSA, which confirmed the presence of a PComm aneurysm with a wide neck. Explaining the case, Dr. Patel noted that the aneurysm could have been treated through a craniotomy or endovascular coiling. However, after careful consultation with the patient, it was decided to place an intrasaccular device called CONTOUR, which eliminated the need for a stent or flow diverter. The procedure was successful, and Bano was discharged three days later.
Dr. Patel emphasised the importance of high-end infrastructure and expertise in performing such complex procedures. He noted that advancements in medical technology, like the CONTOUR device, allow for better patient outcomes in treating brain aneurysms.
