Accuray Launches Advanced Radiotherapy Solution, Aims To Bridge Cancer Care Gaps

Accuray, a radiotherapy technology, is supporting efforts to make cancer care affordable with the launch of Accuray Helix, a new configuration of its Radixact Treatment Delivery System.

With the India facing a growing cancer crisis, experts are urging immediate action to broaden access to quality cancer care. According to the Indian Journal of Medical Research, the country is expected to witness a 12.8 per cent increase in cancer cases by 2025, putting immense pressure on an already strained healthcare system. Currently, India sees approximately 1.4 million new cancer cases annually, and this number is expected to rise as access to timely diagnosis and treatment remains limited.

The National Library of Medicine estimates that 50-60 per cent of cancer patients will require radiotherapy during their treatment. Radiotherapy plays a critical role in managing cancer, offering effective tumor control, alleviating symptoms, and treating localized disease. In 2020, nearly 70 per cent of the 10 million cancer-related deaths globally occurred in low- and middle-income countries, underscoring stark disparities in access to cancer care. Breast cancer, for example, highlights this inequality. While breast cancer survival rates have improved globally, the survival rate in India (66.4 per cent) remains significantly lower than in developed nations like the United States (90.2 per cent).

Although major cities in India have advanced cancer treatment facilities, many people in smaller towns and rural areas face significant barriers to accessing care. These patients often must travel long distances or, in many cases, forego treatment altogether, contributing to higher mortality rates. In response, both the central and state governments are working together to enhance cancer care infrastructure and broaden access. Initiatives are underway to extend universal health coverage, improving the availability and affordability of cancer treatment throughout the country.

Accuray, a radiotherapy technology, is supporting these efforts with the launch of Accuray Helix, a new configuration of its Radixact Treatment Delivery System. As per the company claims, Helix is built on the TomoTherapy helical platform, and the system brings versatility and precision, enabling personalised treatment.

“At Accuray, our mission is to expand the reach of radiation therapy to improve as many lives as possible, regardless of location,” said Xavier De Misouard, President & General Manager – EIMEA, Accuray. “The introduction of Accuray Helix is a crucial step toward addressing gaps in cancer care across countries like India. By offering advanced, fast, and accurate treatments, we empower medical teams to treat more patients and improve outcomes nationwide.” he added.

Vidhi Prasad, Managing Director – India & Subcontinent, Accuray, emphasised the importance of partnerships in this endeavor. “We are collaborating closely with healthcare providers throughout India to deliver precision cancer care technology. Our goal is to enable professionals to manage growing patient volumes without compromising on care quality, ensuring that no patient is left behind,” he said. The company is aiming to address India's escalating cancer burden and bridging the gap between quality care and accessibility.
