AICC RCOG Unveils Guidelines Advocating Mandatory HPV Vaccination For Young Women

Cervical cancer ranks as the fourth most common cancer in women globally and the second leading cancer affecting Indian women aged 15 to 44

The All India Coordinating Committee of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (AICC RCOG) has called for mandatory HPV vaccination among adolescents and young adults to curb the rising incidence of cervical cancer. At a recent event, the committee launched the Best Practice Guidelines on Mandatory HPV Vaccination, with Femina Miss India World 2024, Nikita Porwal, gracing the occasion as a special guest to amplify awareness around cervical cancer prevention.

Cervical cancer ranks as the fourth most common cancer in women globally and the second leading cancer affecting Indian women aged 15 to 44. Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the primary cause of cervical cancer, accounting for 70 per cent of cases worldwide. In India, approximately 123,907 women are diagnosed with HPV cervical cancer annually, with 77,348 succumbing to the disease.

The guidelines emphasise vaccinating preadolescents and adolescents, a demographic highly susceptible to HPV infections. Speaking at the event, Dr. Uma Ram, All-India Chair of AICC RCOG, stated, "Raising awareness about HPV and its health risks is crucial. Vaccinating adolescents ensures a stronger immune response and can prevent over 90 per cent of cancers caused by HPV. This initiative aims to empower communities with knowledge and increase HPV vaccination coverage across the nation."

Highlighting the importance of proactive health measures, Nikita Porwal remarked, "I am honoured to join this initiative to empower women in India to protect themselves against preventable diseases like cervical cancer. Consult a gynaecologist today and take charge of your health. Remember, Why Wait? Vaccinate!"

Supported by MSD India as the print and distribution partner, the initiative underscores the importance of HPV vaccination in achieving a significant reduction in cervical cancer incidence.
