In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, AIMS Hospital has launched “Shakti,” a support group aimed at empowering women affected by breast cancer. The initiative seeks to offer emotional, educational, and social support to patients and their families, providing a safe space for sharing experiences and fostering resilience.
The launch event was attended by around 150 cancer patients, survivors, and their families. Social activist Suhasi Ravindra Chavan served as the Guest of Honor, joined by AIMS Hospital’s oncology team, including Dr. Supriya Bambarkar, Director of the Oncology Department, and esteemed consultants Dr. Neemesh Lodh, Breast Surgical Oncologist, Dr. Rakesh Patil, Medical & Hemato Oncologist, and Dr. Sagar Gayakwad, Radiation Oncologist.
“Shakti” aims to increase breast health awareness, educate women on self-exams, and guide them through diagnoses and treatment choices. With breast cancer rates rising in India, the initiative underscores the importance of early detection. "Many women miss early warning signs such as lumps or changes in the breast, which can delay treatment and worsen outcomes," said Dr. Lodh.
The support group will hold workshops, counseling sessions, and peer support programs to help patients through their cancer journey. Dr. Rakesh Patil highlighted that early detection through regular self-exams and mammograms after the age of 35 could significantly improve survival rates.
“At AIMS Hospital, we recognise that care goes beyond medical treatment. ‘Shakti’ will provide holistic support, ensuring no woman faces her breast cancer journey alone,” Dr. Patil added.
Suhasi Ravindra Chavan concluded the event by commending AIMS Hospital for its community outreach, stating, “This initiative will inspire hope and empower women to fight and overcome breast cancer.”
